DOE Honors Indigenous Tribes With Native American Heritage Month Observation
Miss Chief Rocka performed the Jingle Dress Dance to open DOE’s Native American Heritage Month Observance.
The long-standing relationship between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Tribal Nations across the country was celebrated as part of Native American Heritage Month during an observance held at DOE’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The theme, “Finding the Good Path: Where Indian Country and Energy Meet,” evoked the history of collaboration between Tribes and DOE, as well as the future of clean energy on Indigenous lands.
Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm shared that she has been reflecting on the adage: “Leadership is planting trees under whose shade you will never sit.” She recounted her visit to the Pechanga Reservation and standing beneath the canopy of Wi’áaşal, one of the oldest oak trees in the world, during the DOE Tribal Clean Energy Summit early this year.
Everett Waller, Chairman of the Osage Minerals Council, served as the keynote speaker and discussed the importance of having a strong, supportive working relationship with DOE, while also stressing the need to recognize and respect Tribal sovereignty.

New Microgrid Program To Help Underserved and Indigenous Communities
The Partnership held an informational webinar on Nov. 11, 2024, to cover the structure, technical focus, and eligibility criteria.
The DOE Community Microgrid Assistance Partnership will provide support to underserved and Indigenous communities in remote, rural, and islanded regions throughout the United States, including Tribal Nations, to develop or improve microgrid systems.
The pilot program will focus on communities in Alaska, Hawaii, and Tribal lands, primarily in the Great Plains and Southwest. DOE is currently accepting proposals from these communities and the energy utilities that serve them until Dec. 20, 2024.

Communities LEAP Final Report Highlights Successes and Lessons Learned
DOE announced the publication of the Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) pilot final report, which details the program’s technical assistance phases, highlights successes from communities, and discusses lessons learned that will be applied to the second cohort. Check out the report here.
During the program, 24 communities, including the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, received technical assistance for various clean energy pathways. Communities now have actionable resources to improve environmental conditions and facilitate sustained economic empowerment.
